The Big Picture Curriculum

The Big Picture Curriculum

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Curriculum sets out the entitlement to learning for all pupils in schools in Guernsey. It is designed to deliver ‘joyous and purposeful’ education and give teachers, pupils, parents, and the wider community a clear understanding of the knowledge and skills that young people will gain during their time at school.

The curriculum should enable all students to learn and achieve whilst promoting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The ‘Big Picture’ Bailiwick of Guernsey Curriculum aims to prepare the children of our islands for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century.

The Big Picture Curriculum is designed to enable children to become well-rounded learners by including the following elements:

  • Learning outside the classroom
  • Promoting positive mental health and wellbeing
  • Developing a Growth Mindset
  • Financial Literacy
  • Targeted teaching of the Elements of Learning

The Four Core Purposes

The Big Picture Curriculum prepares learners for the complexities of the world outside the classroom. The curriculum is for all children of all abilities and needs with entitlements to ensure children become:

  • Successful learners,
  • Confident individuals,
  • Responsible citizens and
  • Effective contributors.

These are the four core purposes which focus on learning.  Through developing skills in these four areas our children become life-long learners with an unlimited potential for acquiring knowledge.
